What Are the PTE Test Types in 2025?

There are different types of PTE tests available. Pearson offers multiple PTE test centers, each designed for specific purposes:

• For students who are planning to apply for higher education or migration to Australia and New Zealand they can opt for PTE Academic 
• PTE Core is especially designed for Canada immigration and work visa applicants.
• A Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK student and work visas will evaluate PTE Academic UKVI.

PTE Academic Exam Format in 2025

The PTE Academic is a fully computer-based test, completed in a single sitting of around 2 hours and 15 minutes. It is divided into four modules:

What are the key changes in PTE Academic (From August 2025)

1. Introduction of two new speaking tasks

• Respond to a Situation: Read a text and listen to audio, then respond to the situation (like leaving a voicemail or replying to a request).
• Summarize Group Discussion: Listen to a 2–3 minute audio recording of a group discussion and summarize key points.

These tasks were introduced to make the tests more practical and aligned with real-life communication

2. Human intervented Scoring method

PTE exam is an AI-based scoring system and it still continues in assessing grammar, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and comprehension through the same format. But now, after the updates Human review checkpoints are introduced to seven question types. This intervention is made to increase the accuracy and fairness of the examination. This double marking system combines AI scoring with human review for these specific tasks.

Human interventions are introduced in tasks such as:

1. Describe Image
2. Retell Lecture
3. Summarize Written Text
4. Write Essay
5. Summarize Spoken Text
6. Summarize Group Discussion

3. Exam Format Remains similar to the old pattern

• The original 20 question types are still part of the test.
• Test format and duration remain unchanged.
• Minor scoring changes are made to improve reliability and fairness of the exam
